The big news is that we’re putting our Madison home on the market and moving to Greensboro. The photo to the right is a big reason why. I now drive to Greensboro 6-7 days a week and I’m exhausted from living like a bag lady. With purse, gym bag, computer bag, grocery bags, lunch bag, coat and stuff I pick up from errands, it usually takes me two trips in from the car to unload all my stuff. Then I pack it up again the next morning and repeat. Aside from the clutter, I’m losing at least an hour and half every day to drive time. No mas.
Luckily, house hunting is something Blair and I both enjoy. I love touring homes, envisioning what my life would look like in each one. Of course, we’re realizing that it’s going to be hard to match the home we have now. Our Madison home was built in 1906 and has the original hardwoods, 5 coal-burning fireplaces, solid wood doors, 10-foot ceilings, crown moldings, and the list goes on. We’ve renovated our kitchen, all our bathrooms, and the upstairs living area. We LOVE our home. Looking at new construction it’s hard to see past cookie-cutter homes that feel flimsy with their hollow doors and beige uniformity. The homes are beautiful, but they feel so conventional. Picturing myself living in some of them feels like acting, and not really me.
I’ve learned things about myself through the house hunting process. Namely, that I am a kitchen whore. Show me an open kitchen with granite counter tops, stainless steel updated appliances, pass through window, center island, dropped bar and fancy lighting and I’ll readily overlook dingy walls, small yards, and master bedrooms the size of a postage stamp.
Blair and I have lived happily in Madison for 17 years. And while I hate the thought of abandoning the home we’ve put so much time and love into, we both find ourselves eager for the fresh start a move offers. 2013 is going to be a great year.
